Pediatric Dentistry

Our Clinic not only specializes in adults but also in children. Dr. Milo Garcia-Tempone  has a certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Lousiana State University , we love to see children in our office!!

Twenty six percent of the children with less than 4 years have caries. This is reflected in a survey done in Spain to pre –school children in 2007 by the Spanish Dental Health System and elaborated by three different  pediatric dental societies. In order to avoid the presence of caries in children , most pediatric dentists are recommending starting with oral hygiene habits  very soon , and visiting the pediatric dentis in the first year of life
.
Below is a series of recommendations to follow concerning the dental care, and oral hygiene for your son or daughter.

Before the first year, visit the dentist

In the past most dentists use to recommend visiting the dentist when the children had all their 20 teeth present, we are talking of close to 3 years of age. However the presence of caries  and other dental problems present in pre school  children less than 3 years old has made the pediatric dentists change the recommendation into seeing them before they are one year old, basically for the purpose of guiding the parents with the oral hygiene instructions for their sons. After the first appointment is made, check ups should be done if everything goes fine every year.

First Visit to the Dentist

The pediatric dentista will explain the mother or father how to clean properly the teeth of their children, answer all doubts and questions they may have as to baby bottle tooth decay . Examine him or her for caries , cross bites, and development problems of their jaws. It is a good moment for registering their medical and dental history. This is the moment to correct any bad habit and make all recommendations to avoid having caries in the future and establishing good oral hygiene principles.

Prepare your child

When the moment arrives to visit for the first time the paediatric dentist, parents should try to transmit to their children confidence and security when visiting the dental office. The relationship of the pediatric dentist and the child should be very good from the beginning.

Examine the teeth of your child
It is convenient to check regularly the teeth of your child for stains, discolorations, holes, remember that healthy baby teeth have white color and any doubt take your child to the paediatric dentist

Prevent caries with oral hygiene

Before the first tooth appears it is important in maintaining  good oral hygiene habits by cleaning the gums after each meal with a wet gauze. When the first teeth appears is the moment to use the tooth brush without any tooth paste, until the child is 2 years of age.

Remember that if your child is being fed with the bottle , they should never go to sleep with it because the sugar in the milk can cause decay (baby bottle teeth decay)
